Format Comparison
Native vs. Display (Banner) Advertising
Two different formats, two different jobs. Here's how to tell them apart and when each one makes sense.
Native and display are both paid digital ads, and they're often bought with the same tools, which is why people mix them up. "Display ads" and "banner ads" mean the same thing; banner is just the older name. The real difference is how the ad fits on the page.
Display advertising (banner ads)
Display ads, the rectangles at the top of the page or in the sidebar, are visually separate from the content around them. They're built to stand out: bold colors, motion, clear ad framing. That visibility is also the format's biggest weakness. After years of seeing them, most people tune banners out without thinking. That's called banner blindness.
Native advertising
Native ads sit inside the content and match its format: an in-feed recommendation, a sponsored listicle entry, a suggested-article module. They don't try to grab attention with flashy contrast. They earn it by looking like something the reader came to the page for.
Performance differences
Native ads generally get more attention than display ads, and industry studies have tied them to a lift in purchase intent. Most of that gap comes down to two things: banner blindness working against display, and native's in-content placement working in its favor.
When display still makes sense
Display isn't obsolete. It's still efficient for pure brand awareness plays, retargeting warm audiences who already know the brand, and campaigns where visual impact and animation genuinely matter to the message. Display also has more mature programmatic infrastructure for highly granular targeting at scale.
When native makes more sense
Native usually wins for performance goals like lead generation and direct sales, especially when people need some context before they buy: insurance, Medicare, financial products and bigger e-commerce purchases. An advertorial gives you room to build that context in a way a banner can't.
| Display / Banner | Native | |
|---|---|---|
| Visual style | Stands apart from content | Matches surrounding content |
| Typical goal | Awareness, retargeting | Leads, direct response |
| Attention | Lower (banner blindness) | Higher |
| Landing experience | Product/offer page | Advertorial, then offer |
